WASHINGTON— Today, the Supreme Court of the United States upheld a lower court decision ordering Alabama’s congressional maps to be redrawn to better represent Black voters. The America Votes Senior Leadership Team issued the following statement:

“This decision represents a victory for the voters of Alabama and for the health of our democracy. By upholding Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, the court has affirmed the fundamental right of Americans to choose their leaders. It is an acknowledgement of the racial discrimination that Black Americans face when voting, and a step toward addressing this discrimination as the Voting Rights Act intended.

“We applaud the organizations and advocates who have worked to defend the right to fair representation and who made this victory possible. Every American deserves for their vote to be counted fairly.

“While this decision is worth celebrating, more must be done to ensure equitable representation and fair electoral maps. Congress should act swiftly to restore and strengthen the Voting Rights Act so all voters may benefit from this legislation’s necessary protections.”
