America Votes’ Executive Director, Daria Dawson, issued the following statement on The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act which was passed by the United States House of Representatives and begins consideration in the United States Senate:

“The Trump administration and Republicans in Congress know that if there are free and fair midterm elections, they will lose at every level of the ballot. Instead of changing their historically unpopular policies and positions, they want to rig the game.

“Under the guise of strengthening election integrity, they are trying to make it harder for millions of eligible U.S. citizens to exercise their constitutional right to vote. The SAVE America Act would have an even harsher impact on Americans with disabilities, women, and those in rural areas. Any policy that places more barriers in front of eligible voters is not about integrity– it is about exclusion.

“Instead of trying to shut more and more Americans out of the democratic process, leaders in Congress and in the White House should focus on making life more affordable like they claimed they would.

“Lets call the SAVE America Act what it is: a blatant attempt to retain power ahead of the midterms while making it more difficult for millions to exercise their right to vote. On behalf of all American voters, every U.S. Senator should reject this legislation.

“America Votes will continue working to ensure that every eligible American has the information they need to exercise their right to vote. In the upcoming midterms and beyond, we are committed to building a democracy  that is reflective of and accessible to all of our communities.”
