Cecile Richards Progressive Leader Award Reception: The 2017 Cecile Richards Progressive Leader Award will be presented to Lee Saunders, president of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME). America Votes is honored to recognize President Saunders’ steadfast leadership as a tireless defender of workers’ rights who has consistently championed progressive issues, values and strong partnerships. As the first African-American president of AFSCME, Saunders leads 1.6 million members who “Make America Happen.”

President Saunders has dedicated his career to grassroots union organizing and the advancement of progressive issues and values within the labor movement, campaigns, and in coalitions and communities across the country.
