Today, a historic decision confirmed Justice Allison Riggs as the rightful winner of the North Carolina Supreme Court race, despite unrelenting attacks from the right. This historic win for democracy in North Carolina is a testament to the power of our electoral process and the will of the people.
“Today’s decision to reject Republican Jefferson Griffin’s attempt to overturn a democratic election is more than just a legal outcome — it’s a powerful affirmation that our democracy, despite being an imperfect system, can still operate fairly,” said Greg Speed, America Votes President.
“At a time when many are feeling discouraged about the future of our democracy, this ruling serves as a reminder that accountability is possible and that the will of the electorate still holds weight in our institutions.”
Despite the clear outcome, the North Carolina Supreme Court race was the only outstanding, uncertified election result from the 2024 cycle.
“More than five months after Election Day, this court ruling affirms what we have known all along: that North Carolina voters elected Allison Riggs to the North Carolina Supreme Court fair and square,” said Ashlei Blue, North Carolina State Director for America Votes.
“The concerted effort by conservatives to disqualify approximately 65,000 ballots lawfully cast by North Carolinians and steal this state Supreme Court seat is dangerous and concerning. While we are relieved that Justice Riggs will be able to retain her seat, we recognize that this race should have been decided long ago.”
“America Votes and our partners will continue to work year-round in North Carolina to ensure that the will of the voters is respected and defended.”
America Votes is the central coordination hub of the progressive community both nationally and in more than 20 states across the country, working with more than 400 state and national partner organizations to advance progressive policies, win elections, and protect every American’s right to vote.
