WASHINGTON— Today, the Supreme Court of the United States upheld a lower court decision ordering Alabama’s congressional maps to be redrawn to better represent Black voters. The America Votes Senior Leadership Team issued the following statement:
“This decision represents a victory for the voters of Alabama and for the health of our democracy. By upholding Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, the court has affirmed the fundamental right of Americans to choose their leaders. It is an acknowledgement of the racial discrimination that Black Americans face when voting, and a step toward addressing this discrimination as the Voting Rights Act intended.
“We applaud the organizations and advocates who have worked to defend the right to fair representation and who made this victory possible. Every American deserves for their vote to be counted fairly.
“While this decision is worth celebrating, more must be done to ensure equitable representation and fair electoral maps. Congress should act swiftly to restore and strengthen the Voting Rights Act so all voters may benefit from this legislation’s necessary protections.”

WASHINGTON— President Joseph R. Biden announced Tuesday that he will be seeking reelection in 2024. The America Votes Senior Leadership Team issued the following statement:
“President Biden has led our nation through unprecedented challenges and built a record of extraordinary leadership and effectiveness. Over the past two years, the Biden-Harris administration has accomplished far more than many believed would be possible, keeping the promises they made during the 2020 campaign and leading our nation forward.
“This administration’s capable leadership has helped to lead us out of the COVID-19 pandemic, defend our democracy from tremendous threats, and protect the fundamental rights of every American. Biden’s legislative record includes protections for LGBTQ+ and interracial couples, meaningful gun violence prevention measures, the confirmation of Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, and the largest ever investment to combat climate change.
“Today, President Biden has articulated a bold vision in defense of our freedoms and progress that stands in stark contrast to MAGA extremists. America Votes and our coalition partners stand ready to build toward progressive victories at every level in 2024. After mobilizing a historic number of voters in 2020 and executing a record-breaking midterm effort in 2022, we will continue to work year-round to build progressive power in states, strengthen our democracy, and protect every American’s right to vote.”
