November 7, 2018

Emily Brown,

America Votes President Greg Speed released the following statement on the 2018 election night results, which included Democrats flipping control of the U.S. House, seven governors’ mansions, numerous legislative chambers and statewide offices, as well as the passage of ballot measures that will create a more inclusive democracy and modern elections in states from Florida to Michigan to Nevada:

“From Washington, DC, to state capitals to local offices, progressives’ significant gains in power at every lever were fueled by the unprecedented voter mobilization of America Votes and hundreds of partner organizations working in close coordination in the field.

“All told, America Votes partners knocked on at least 20 million doors and sent millions of calls and texts that fueled historic midterm turnout and sharp increases among youth and voters of color in key states from Nevada to Wisconsin to North Carolina. The America Votes coalition is focused on the long game, working year-round to engage and organize communities to build progressive power from the state and local levels to DC.

“We are extremely proud of our partners’ efforts to flip control of five gubernatorial mansions and five legislative chambers in the America Votes state network, deliver at least a dozen pickups in the U.S. House and pass initiatives to protect democracy and expand voter participation in Florida, Michigan, Nevada and North Carolina.”

Concord, NH – Throughout the 2018 election cycle, America Votes New Hampshire coalition members coordinated more closely than ever before to execute the Legislative Goalie program to impact critical state level races, including those for state House, state Senate, Executive Council and the governor’s mansion. These efforts focused on educating voters on where candidates stand on key issues such as health care, education, the environment and family economic issues. A coordinated down-ballot voter outreach program anchored by Win Together and Let America Vote started in June—earlier and more extensive than ever before—and involved talking to Granite Staters in 129 targeted districts about 212 candidates and countless critical issues. The program also included a paid media initiative with targeted and coordinated mail and digital components.

“More America Votes New Hampshire partners than ever before joined efforts in 2018 to engage folks on state legislative races, focusing on the issues that matter most to Granite State families and stressing the importance of being part of the electoral process,” said America Votes New Hampshire State Director Liz Wester. “Thanks to the collective dedication and commitment of these organizations, we were able to reach out to countless individuals across the state and interact with them about state-level candidates whose policy-making decisions have a major impact on the lives of everyday Granite Staters.”

Organizations that took part in the Legislative Goalie program include, but are not limited to:

  • American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Council 93
  • Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee Independent Expenditure
  • Granite State Action, a New Hampshire project of the Faith in Action Fund
  • Family Friendly PAC
  • Families First New Hampshire PAC
  • Granite State Progress
  • Let America Vote
  • National Education Association New Hampshire
  • New Hampshire AFL-CIO
  • New Hampshire Youth Movement
  • NextGen New Hampshire
  • Planned Parenthood Action Fund New Hampshire
  • Rights and Democracy
  • Service Employees International Union
  • Win Together

Some organizations participated in actions geared toward increasing civic awareness and participation among their organizational membership, while others engaged in communications with the public at large. As of November 6, America Votes New Hampshire partners had knocked on 149,435 doors, including 65,194 doors before the New Hampshire primary on September 11, engaged 32,707 voters at the door or on the phone and reached out to 445,981 voters through direct mail and digital ads. $418,891 was spent on digital ads, and $663,875 was spent on direct mail.
